“Skål! Scandinavian Spirits” presented by the Museum of Danish America and History Camp Iowa

Advanced registration required through Eventbrite; reservations must be made by April 21.

"Skål! Scandinavian Spirits” will introduce participants to 1000 years of beer and aquavit in Scandinavian culture. Tova Brandt will present the history and traditions around these adult beverages, and then lead a guided tasting of both imported and domestic aquavits, along with food pairings. Presentation and food are available for participants of all ages – aquavit samples are only for those age 21 and older.

Tova Brandt is on the staff of the Museum of Danish America as the Albert Ravenholt Curator of Danish-American Culture. This presentation is based on an exhibition of the same title that is currently traveling on a national tour.

Plan to arrive early to enjoy the museum’s exhibitions on three floors of galleries and throughout the 30-acre Jens Jensen Prairie Landscape Park.

Exhibitions on view include:

  • “Sport for Sports’ Sake: Athletes and Ethnicity in Danish America” exploring sports past and present, from champion tug-of-war teams to Danish-American Fred Hoiberg
  • “Home: Sculpture by Dennis Andersen” an art installation by an Elk Horn native now living in Atlanta, Georgia
  • “Across Oceans, Across Time” the story of why Danes left Denmark, what attracted them to the United States, how they settled into new communities, and how they continue to express Danish heritage
  • LEGO play area, for builders of all ages
  • Design Store, featuring Scandinavian design in jewelry, housewares, cookware, and décor

This event is presented in partnership with History Camp Iowa. Visit www.historycamp.org/iowa to learn more.
